Sooo... this is more for a friend who I am trying to help but I'll admit that it will impact me as well since my mage is 79 now and I want him to hold aggro
My RL friend plays a level 80 pally and tries to tank with it but is having a heck of a time all around. He does not keep aggro and I think it is simply a lack of experience running the pally as a tank. From 1 to 80 him and another RL friend both grouped 2-man and that was it ... no guild runs or randoms ... nada.
I ran his toon through a character optimizer and have a laundry list of eq we are hunting for and found some macros he can use to speed up things. Now the next step is to look at builds. I was thinking of looking at the Zygor Pally build but my guess it is more for DPS to level then protection for threat.
Anyone got good builds for a prot pally and/or links to good reading resources for him to learn some methods from?

I believe I posted up a protection build in the Talent Builds thread that was based off of info I got from elitistjerks. If it's not there let me know and I'll post it up for you. Should be a good one for tanking with.

Interface has a lot to do with it also, I finally got mine setup the way I like it and one that works for me.
The 969696969 rotation is key, and it is very easy to setup your interface to work with this.
Some great information on this is here - http://www.wow-pro.com/class_guides/tannyrs_paladin_tanking_guide
Also check out my interface, this might not work for everyone, but after trial and error it works GREAT for me.
I have it linked in the 'post your interface' thread hea - http://www.zygorguides.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3950
The key to tanking is keeping agro from the healer, you are NOT responsible for out dpsing the dps group. It simply isn't possible. It is the healers role to keep the group alive, and it is the DPS's responsibility to stay UNDER the threat of the tank.
Now if the thank is not generating a lot of threat that might be a problem.
There have been a few times I have been in a group with a dps 2 lvls higher than me getting pissed off because his 1 click macro is pulling more dps than I am threat. After telling him that my job is to make sure the healer does not die, and the healer agreeing with me he saw where we were going and we didn't have a problem again. the instance actually went alot quicker once everyone realized how to play their roles.
I am still a young tank, as my first 80 is a caster, but I can try to answer some questions if he has any.

Thanks for all of the input folks. I really need to sit down with him and go over things but I want to understand the class first. I have never played a Pally or warrior before to give any advice on.
Cabby - I snaged your tank build and looking around there seems to be a basic 0/53/6 foundation that most Pally tank builds are based on. so I sent that to my friend.
kcmatt - I had sent the Pally_as_tank article to him already but the others I did not find. Once the wowarmory.com site is back up I'll look that one over and send read / send the other links on to him as well.
wachuwamekil - I use nUI+ and at our last LAN party he saw my interface ... he was interested and liked it but in the end it is too big of a change for him. So I need to find things that help him while not changing his UI. The wow-pros article looks really promising and I need to send that one over to him!
In the end the more threat he holds the better my chances of staying alive are. Right now his threat generation is low enough that I can pull it using frostbolt while not using icy veins
