Through trial and error and good old Wowhead I discovered that you must not get any damage on the Rylakinator. You must pull by some other means: basically run in front of it and drag him over to the whelpling. Stand there until mom comes down. Do not engage. Just wait. Putting this note in that guide would be very helpful.
Note: Some Wowhead comments also claim that it wouldn't work for a warlock while the pet was out. I did it on my hunter with my pet on passive. I think the real issue is making sure that the pet doesn't do damage. However, if you aren't doing damage it doesn't hurt to dismiss any pets prior to attempting.
