Guide Professions Cooking (1-600) Step 441 - Alliance
Pandaria, (Valley of the Four Winds).

Following the guide step text, I killed approximately 131,468,212 Snagtooth Hooligans, and not one of them dropped a Juicycrunch carrot. There's a hole in the ground (a tunnel) right at the location that Zygor's green dot (waypoint) shows which has Turnips inside it at the bottom, but I saw no carrots.

    Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here?

The Snagtooth mobs (including the Hooligan) can drop the carrots. The problem is that Blizzard has made all vegetable drops very rare. They did this to promote people growing their own vegetables with the farm. There are four ways to get the vegetables and we have the farming method in there because people asked for it.

Method 1. Like you have been trying, farming them as drops from mobs.
Method 2. Use your farm to grow them.
Method 3. Farm animals for meat drops to turn into cooking tokens to purchase the vegetables.
Method 4. Purchase them from the AH.

I have listed those methods in order of slowest to fastest. #1 can take a couple days to farm up veggies for 1 step. #2 can take a day or two to grow them depending on how many farm plots you have and how many veggies you need. #3 can take a few hours to a day depending on how well the meat is dropping and how many tokens you will need (1 token = 25 veggies). #4 is the fastest but does cost more.

I would personally go with #3 or #4. If you have the gold just buy them from the AH to get it over and done with. If you don't have the gold or would rather not go to the AH to buy the veggies then right beside Halfhill there is a marsh area with crane birds in it. Go in there and slaughter those birds to get the http://www.wowhead.com/item=74839 drops. You will need 20 of thoese Breasts for 1 token which you can turn in to the http://www.wowhead.com/npc=64940 right in Halfhill. Just get purchase a http://www.wowhead.com/item=87662 from him and then click it in your bag to fill it and turn it back into him for the token.

      Holy fertilizer, Batman!

Now we are having to deal with the matter of semantics; Farming (which used to mean going out and killing mobs or visiting nodes) versus Farming (the new term) which means to grow your own in a garden plot!

It makes me wish Blizzard had not complicated the game by introducing Pandaria and all its idiosyncrasies. This is the very first time I've heard of what you mentioned -- building farms! Maybe they are aiming at having WoW turn into another Sid Meyer's Civilization game? LOL

Oh, well. I don't think increasing my cooking skill from 525+ to 600 is even worthwhile, considering the hassles. I haven't decided yet, but I'm certainly glad you informed me of these issues and alternatives. Thanks, Cabby.

In any event, considering the number of those Hooligans I have killed already without getting 1 single carrot, I think Zygor pointing to that location/method is an utter waste of time. The drop rate is horrible. Not Zygor's fault, unless some other mobs drop them somewhere else.

Depending on level, I'd recommend killing the Wyrmhorn Turtles http://www.wowhead.com/npc=56256#. instead of the cranes. The turtles don't have aggro, aren't social, and seem to have a higher drop rate of meat.
