Is there a way (or will there be a way) to suggest when a piece of gear being rolled on will be an upgrade to know when to roll need vs greed?

You can use the Pawn addon which calculates if and how much better an item is similar to the guide but Pawn shows it in the item tooltip:

Another useful addon is HabeebIt, it shows the loot list of raid bosses for your current spec so you can quickly look if a bonus roll is necessary:
